How the Long Drought in Jakarta is Affecting Ornamental Plant Traders

Jakarta

The long drought that is currently hitting the country has left roadside ornamental plant traders shaking their heads. The reason is that during this summer their income could decline greatly due to the sentiment of potential buyers.

Jaku (37), an ornamental plant seller in the Babelan area, Bekasi Regency, said that many people are reluctant to buy ornamental plants in the middle of the rainy dry season. Because many potential buyers are worried that the plants they buy will die easily.

According to him, little rainfall and scorching heat also require prospective buyers to give more care to the plants they buy. This condition is very different during the rainy season where plants can grow well by themselves without needing to be given more attention.

“If it’s like this, (plants) are rarely interested in the summer, people are afraid of death. In the rainy season, the flowers will flourish, if you don’t water them, the plants will flourish,” said Jaku to detikcom when met Thursday (5/10/2023).

Apart from that, during the dry season many plants appear dry with yellow leaves ready to fall. The appearance of plants like this makes potential buyers even more hesitant to take out the contents of their wallets. In fact, according to Jaku, plant conditions like this are normal during the dry season and happen every year.

“Yes, sometimes (the condition of the plant looks) less than that, then all of this will fall off. Yes, then all of it will fall off and replace it with new leaves. There’s no problem, the important thing is to water it,” he explained.

What’s worse, according to Jaku, plants are merchandise that people rarely buy from the start because they last. This means that once purchased, it is rare for anyone to buy it again because the plant can be cared for for a long time.

“If this is the problem, it’s durable goods. Once you buy this item, it’s big enough. It’s also called plant goods, they’re long-lasting goods, not like food goods. Sometimes they sell, sometimes not, not necessarily,” said Jaku.

Luckily, Jaku still has several customers who hire its services to care for their plants regularly. From there, he admitted that he could still make a small fortune to cover his daily needs due to the lack of plant buyers.

It was explained that the customers who usually asked for this plant care service were those who had bought plants in bulk from his place. Periodically, Jaku will maintain these plants so that they continue to grow well and do not die.

“That (helping to care for plants) at least twice a month. Yes, if the problem is watering which automatically waters, it’s just that there are shortcomings, for example if it’s not healthy, what’s the feed, give it fertilizer, replace the planting medium,” explained Jaku.
