Analisadaily.com, Jakarta – A research from the Universite de Montreal, Canada research team showed that the high content of vitamin K contained in green vegetables can regulate blood sugar levels in the body so that it can prevent the risk of developing diabetes.

Vitamin K is an essential nutrient for blood clotting as well as bone and heart health. These nutrients can prevent the buildup of calcium in the arteries, thereby reducing the risk of high blood pressure and heart and kidney disease. Some foods rich in vitamin K include vegetables such as kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and meats such as beef liver, ground beef, chicken and bacon. Medical Daily on Monday (22/5) local time reported the results of research published in Cell Reports that not only stated the link between vitamin K and diabetes, but also showed how this vitamin helps keep blood sugar levels under control. “Diabetes is known to be caused by a reduced number of beta cells or an inability to produce enough insulin, which is why we were very interested in this new finding. To elucidate the cellular mechanisms by which vitamin K maintains beta cell function, it is important to determine which proteins are gamma targets. -carboxylation in these cells,” said the head of the research team, Mathieu Ferron. Reporting from Antara, Tuesday (23/5), the research team discovered a new type of protein that depends on vitamin K so that it can pave the way for the creation of a new research area. “We were able to identify a new gamma-carboxylated protein called ERGP. Our research shows that this protein plays an important role in maintaining physiological levels of calcium in beta cells to prevent inhibition of insulin secretion. Finally, we show that vitamin K via gamma-carboxylation is important for ERGP to do its part,” added Julie Lacomba, a member of the research team.(RZD)
