How the Brits are faring at Wimbledon’s men’s singles

After its cancellation last year, Wimbledon 2021 is well underway, and while we’re gearing up to the third round of matches, we’ve seen plenty of shocks so far – in both the men’s and women’s singles.

In the men’s Wimbledon betting, reigning champion Novak Djokovic is looking most likely to retain his Grand Slam title. With the likes of Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev still in the tournament, there are plenty of challengers.

But with Wimbledon being the home of lawn tennis, played in SW19, we’ve decided to see how the British stars are doing. Read on to see who could go on to reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Dan Evans

The British number 1 is seeded 22nd, and has reached the third round of Wimbledon for the third time. Despite a tie break in the opening set of his first-round match against Spaniard Feliciano López, he’s been largely unchallenged. Evans beat López 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 7-5, before facing another unseeded player in Dušan Lajović. A straight set victory over the Serbian (6-3, 6-3. 6-4) has set up a third-round match over Sebastian Korda, who’s making his debut at the All England Club. You have to fancy Evans’ chances of making it to the fourth round.

Cameron Norrie

Seeded 29th at Wimbledon, Norrie is the British number 2 and has also reached the third round of this year’s tournament. He had to come from behind in his opening round match, to beat Lucas Pouille – and went on to win the remaining three sets to take a 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-2, 7-5 victory. He faced Australian wildcard Alex Bolt in round two, where a straight sets victory set-up an exciting third round tie against Federer. There’s no doubt that the home crowd will be willing Norrie on, and here’s hoping he’s out on Centre Court for the big occasion.

Andy Murray

It’s been a long time coming but Murray returns to the men’s singles at Wimbledon for the first time since he reached the quarter-final in 2017. The wildcard knocked out the 24th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round, before an epic five-set battle over German qualifier Oscar Otte in round two. Murray’s victory: 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 will see him face the 10th seed Denis Shapovalov in the third round. The Canadian received a walkover, after his opponent in round two withdrew following a rib injury.  Can Murray bring another big performance out on Centre Court?

And the rest…

The rest of the British contingent have now been eliminated.

Young wildcard Jack Draper was handed the toughest of ties in round one – facing Djokovic. It looked like a shock could be on the cards with the 19-year-old taking the first set, but the Serb came back and won it: 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

And Jay Clarke was another to suffer a first-round defeat. The British wildcard who reached the second round in 2019, lost out to Belarusian Egor Gerasimov. Despite a dominant performance in the second set, he was knocked out 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Liam Broady has never made it further than the second round at Wimbledon, and that’s how his campaign ended this time around too. After a straight sets victory over Marco Cecchinato, he faced Argentine Diego Schwartzman and despite taking the first set, the wildcard was defeated 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.
