The two know each other through work: Manon is a stylist and Guus is looking for someone to style him at that time. “And I was asked: ‘Gosh, would you like to see if you could do something with Guus Meeuwis?’ I then thought: that’s the guy with glasses and the plaid shirt! What can I do with that, what should I make of it? What’s the idea behind that? What are we going to change about that?”
Despite her doubts, she decides to say yes. “I was invited: ‘Come and see what you think, whether you click.'” When she meets Guus for the first time, one thought immediately flashes through her head. “Oh! Luckily he’s smaller,” she recalls. “Like: then it can never become anything at all. So apparently I had a feeling of: there is something about this gentleman, but it can’t, can’t, never an option.”
Manon does not appear to be exaggerating. In her twenties, she had the motto: ‘Under two meters you cannot enter this attraction.’ “That was kind of my childhood thing, when I was 11 or 12 I really didn’t think it was funny that I was that tall, and like the rest of the world I’ve been inundated with pictures of men always being taller than women. That’s the image you have in your head, it just really wasn’t an option.”
Fortunately, she changed her mind, because the two have completely found each other:
