There was a reason for that.
The advanced Soviet automobile industry was popular in capitalist countries. Some domestic brands were bought even more often than local cars. Among the most popular was the Zaporozhets, but the small car was called differently.
In Europe, the interest in cars was stunning. Among the main advantages, locals noted ease of operation and affordable price. There was a period when “Zaporozhets” outsold even the Italian Fiat, although it was its complete copy.
Moreover, if you ask a European what “Zaporozhets” is, he is unlikely to understand what we are talking about. The thing is that the car produced at the Kommunar plant was sold under the Jalta and Yalta brands. The USSR exported several models abroad: ZAZ 968, SAS 968 and Eliette. The short and sonorous name was much more convenient for the Spaniards and French to pronounce.
