Grey’s Anatomy has developed many romantic relationships between surgeons at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital. One of the most talked about couples on the longtime show was Dr Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Dr Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw). Ramirez finally left Grey’s in May 2016, et Grey’s released the last episode of Capshaw in May 2018.
Sara Ramirez thought of Grey’s Anatomy fans when she heard Callie and Arizona were divorcing
The love affair between Callie and Arizona began in season 5 of Grey’s. At the time, Callie divorced her husband, George O’Malley (TR Knight), after cheating on her with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl). After sharing a kiss in a bar, their romance began to blossom. The couple quickly faced several ups and downs in their relationship. Some of the struggles included Arizona leaving Callie for Africa in Season 6. They also treated Callie unexpectedly getting pregnant by Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) in Season 7.

In season 8, Grey’s fans were hoping Callie and Arizona were happy for good. However, their relationship suffered when Arizona lost one of its legs in a plane crash. In season 9, Arizona cheated on Callie and the couple broke up. Although they tried to get back together, a therapy exercise they were considering going their separate ways in Season 11. In the episode, Callie and Arizona’s therapist asked them to spend 30 days apart to work on themselves. At the end of the 30 days, Callie decided to end the marriage.
Ramirez told The Hollywood Reporter that she knew the episode would be difficult for Grey’s fans who loved Callie and Arizona’s wedding.
“I was wondering how the fans were going to receive it, but I had to let go of that worry,” Ramirez said. “Having played the relationship for so many years, I knew it was really a big deal, and the emotional workload challenge of this episode terrified me.

Capshaw and Ramirez admitted they knew the split between Callie and Arizona was imminent. Prior to the breakup, Callie took care of Arizona as she was recovering from the plane crash. Ramirez said Callie prioritized the separation. In the episode, Callie was profuse against the couple’s separation.

“She is [Callie] pretty much resilient the whole time, while still getting a glimpse into her professional life at work without the drama of trying to mend her relationship, ”Ramirez said. “As the therapy sessions progress, Callie begins to see that her life outside of the relationship is so full and that the drama is trying to fix what is wrong with the relationship. Unbeknownst to her, Callie comes to realize that when she doesn’t try to mend this relationship, she finds herself more connected to who she is.
Ramirez also noted that the separation caused Callie to “reunite” after making her living in Arizona for several years.
