Anderson shares how Roger Federer influenced his decision to return (Provided by Tennis World UK)
Two-time Grand Slam finalist Kevin Anderson reveals that Roger Federer played some role in his decision to return to tennis. Anderson, 37, announced this month that he is returning to professional tennis 14 months after retiring.
Earlier this year, Anderson was in Delray Beach and went to a local tennis club to hit some balls. Federer, represented by Tony Godsick, was in town to meet with his agent.
Towards the end of Anderson’s training session, Federer showed up at the club. Anderson and Federer, who had a thrilling match at Wimbledon in 2018, started chatting. Anderson admitted he felt a little intimidated at first – something that has happened to him in the past when facing top players.
But then Anderson told himself he needed to relax and make the best use of this opportunity.
Anderson on meeting Federer:
“It was really interesting because for the first few minutes of our conversation I felt this kind of unease, I felt very insecure.
I’ve been trying to change that and stuff like that. You never know what’s going to happen and it was really a big learning experience for me. If I could do that again [meine Karriere]I probably wouldn’t have spent so many hours on the training ground, but exchanged more with others or put myself in different situations.
I had a great conversation with Roger and for the first time I just felt totally relaxed and having a normal conversation. He was fascinating to listen to, arguably the greatest player of all time when it comes to his shot technique, and the insight he had was really cool.
I hadn’t really associated that with my return before. I think before that happened I was like, ‘Maybe I should come back,'” Anderson said ATP-Website. Anderson returns to tennis this week in Newport.
