On August 5, 2024, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of a solar flare, the bright light on the right. The image shows a subset of true ultraviolet light, colored aquamarine, which illuminates the very hot material in the explosion.

Solar flares are intense radiation caused by the release of magnetic energy associated with sunspots. These are the strongest solar phenomena and last from minutes to hours. Although these energy blasts mostly go into space, they can have a major impact on the upper atmosphere when they reach Earth. In fact, it can cause interruptions in GPS signals and radio communications, and even cause power outages by damaging satellites and transmission line facilities.
