How powerful is the Ceramic Shield?
On purpose the screen of a brand new iPhone 12 break: some Youtubers do this in the name of science. Or actually, for the consumer. Is the Ceramic Shield a clever marketing ploy or is the iPhone 12 series really drop resistant? Armed with a force gauge and a ladder, the screens are put to the test.
iPhone 12 versus power meter
The YouTube channel MobileReviewsEh test the durability of the iPhone 12 screen using a power meter. The channel compares the Ceramic Shield to the screen of the iPhone 11.
The conclusion of the first test is that the iPhone 11 screen breaks at 352 Newton pressure. The iPhone 12 with Ceramic Shield collapses at 443 Newtons of pressure. For the non-physicist among us: 443 Newton pressure cannot be reached just like that, in the case of this video you need a lot of (muscle) strength.
MobileReviewsEh continues the video with a number of scratch tests. As expected, the iPhone 12 is resistant to scratches from coins, keys and a pocket knife. The iPhone 11 also passed the test here unharmed.
The final conclusion is that the screen of the iPhone 12, thanks to the Ceramic Shield, breaks less quickly than the screen of its predecessor. They are also very similar. Both phones are equally sensitive to scratches and wear.

iPhone 12 versus valtests
YouTuber EveryThingApplePro came to similar results in a series of drop tests. The first test, a fall from hip height, is surprisingly enough to cause some damage. The screen is still completely intact, but there is a significant dent visible in the bottom edge of the ‘normal’ iPhone 12.
The screens of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro even survive a 3 meter drop with minimal damage. Only the backs of both devices shattered when dropped from the same height.
EveryThingApplePro concludes that the screen is indeed very powerful. However, it is good to mention that an intact exterior does not immediately mean that the interior is still in order.
