How often should bed linen be washed: One third of Brits do this once a year

How often to change or wash the bed linen

According to a 2012 National Sleep Foundation survey, 91% of people change their sheets every other week. Although this is a generally accepted rule of thumb, dermatologists advise change of bed linen every week or every 10 days.

Many experts recommend weekly washing if:

  • you have allergies or asthma and are sensitive to dust,
  • you have an infection or lesion on the part of your skin that comes into contact with the sheets or pillows,
  • if you sweat excessively,
  • if your pet sleeps with you in bed,
  • if you have a habit of eating in bed,
  • go to bed without taking a shower,
  • if you sleep naked.

Those who do not wash their bed regularly are more likely to be exposed to fungi, bacteria, pollen and animal hair. In people with asthma and allergies, the symptoms of the disease can increase. Even a healthy person can experience nasal congestion and sneezing after sleeping on dirty sheets at night.

As with other sheets, throws and duvets, they should be washed weekly or every two weeks. Down pillows and pillows with synthetic filling are particularly dangerous as sources of fungi. It is recommended to change or clean these pillows once a year or every two years. Blankets can last 15 to 20 years when used with a cover and washed or dry cleaned regularly.
