How Norway Became a Leader in Electric Cars: Sales Data Shows 80-90% of New Cars Sold are Electric

Norway is a country that has switched to electric cars fantastically fast, with sales data showing that 80-90% of new cars sold in this country are fully electric. Of course, this is facilitated by the fact that the car manufacturers themselves are also trying more to offer electric cars there, but data from the Norwegian Road Administration show that already this year the number of electric cars in the country will overtake the number of gasoline cars.

Currently, there are approximately 2.9 million cars registered in Norway, 24.3% of them are fully electric, while 26.9% are gasoline cars. The rest are diesels or various hybrids. Assuming that the current trends continue (there is no reason not to), the number of electric cars will already exceed the number of gasoline cars in this Scandinavian country at the end of this year or at the very beginning of next year.

If we look at the overall distribution, there are still more than 1 million diesel cars in Norway, but their number tends to decrease – old cars are becoming less and less, but new diesel cars are practically not being bought. If current trends continue, in three or four years electric cars will also overtake diesels.

Undeniably, Norway, being a very rich country, has worked intensively on this transition, investing in infrastructure and promoting the purchase of electric cars with various initiatives. These cars received various incentives, while cars with internal combustion engines had to pay high taxes, which made their purchase unprofitable and expensive.
