Kayla is sometimes a little surprised herself at how quickly food disappears from the “Bushwick Fridge”. That morning she filled the fridge in front of a coffee shop on a New York street corner. There were dozens of yogurt tubs in it, hot dog sausages in family packs, plastic bags of apples and gallons of milk. A piece of paper with the inscription “Free Food” on the refrigerator door invites you to help yourself, and apparently this is very popular because there is almost nothing left in the afternoon. Three young women from the area pass by with several bags of groceries and provide supplies. “Everyone has the right to food,” says one of them.

Kayla is certain that the new supplies will also be gone in less than an hour. When the refrigerator fills up, word gets around quickly, she says. “Some come by and call their friends directly.” The “Bushwick Fridge” has been around since July. It’s named for the neighborhood in Brooklyn where it’s located, and Kayla, who doesn’t want to give her last name, is one of the organizers. She helps fill it up and keep it looking neat.
