The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, his counterpart in Barcelona, Ada Colau, and the councilor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, are the mayors who have received the highest remuneration during 2020, according to the latest update of the Salary Information for Administration Positions (ISPA).
Thus, the mayor of the capital of Spain was the councilor with the highest salary during 2020, receiving a salary of 108,517.80 euros per year, 27% more than the salary of that exercise of the chief executive, Pedro Sanchez, which amounted to 84,845 euros per year, according to this update of ISPA published by the Ministry of Finance and Public Function.
After Almeida, there is the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, with 100,000.04 euros per year; the first mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, with 97,144.08 euros per year; the ruler of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Gorka Urtaran, with 90,526.38 euros per year; the mayor of San Sebastián, Eneko Goia, with 87,952.02 euros per year; the first mayor of Valladolid, Óscar Puente, with 86,814.28 euros per year; the councilor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, with 86,360.54 euros per year; and the mayor of Seville, Juan Espadas, with 86,359 euros per year.
All these mayors perceived during the 2020 financial year, the hardest year of the Covid-19 pandemic, a salary higher than that of the Prime Minister, which, as reflected in the Official State Gazette (BOE), was 84,845 euros.
This salary, that of the Prime Minister, is the closest to the one received by the Mayor of Getxo, Amaia Agirre, which in 2020 received a remuneration of 83,398.54 euros, thus becoming the ninth mayor with the highest salary in Spain, despite the fact that this population does not exceed 80,000 inhabitants.
Zamora and Huesca, the least
On the opposite side are the mayors of the cities of Zamora and Huesca. Counting the provincial capitals whose councilors have an exclusive dedication, these two municipalities are the ones with the lowest salary in 2020.
Specific, the mayor of Zamora received 35,787.22 euros per year, while the ruler of Huesca earned an annual remuneration of 37,691.65 euros.
According to these data provided by the Ministry of Finance, there are also four mayors of provincial capitals who received a lower salary, but are in a regime classified as “without dedication.” These are the councilors of Cádiz, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Teruel and Oviedo.
Of more than 8,000 municipalities
The Ministry of Finance and Public Function has updated and published on its website the information regarding the perceptions of the elected positions of the local corporations, which encompasses more than 8,000 municipalities and 52 county councils, in addition to the island councils and councils.
The documents published by the Ministry of Finance also include tables with the salaries of the officials of these administrations by tranches of earnings.
In this list provided by the Ministry directed by María Jesús Montero, the municipalities of the Foral Community of Navarra are not included as it is pending to implement ISPA Navarra for the City Councils.
