How much snow does Chicago have? Snow starts Tuesday before morning rush hour, up to 4 inches possible

Chicago (WLS) – The first measurable snow of the season is heading to the Chicago area and the timing will result in a slippery morning run Tuesday.

Published by the National Weather Service winter weather warning For Chicago and suburbs, Tuesdays from 4:00 to 12:00

Snow will develop in the far southern suburbs during rush hour Tuesday morning before spreading north, ABC7 meteorologist Larry Morey said.

“When the racing is in full swing, so is the snow,” said ABC7 meteorologist Tracy Butler. “We’re not looking at a big backlog, the timing is just awful.”

Morey said the rainy spells would continue into Tuesday afternoon and into the evening rush hour. The mostly snowy spells will continue through Wednesday, with a mix of rain and snow likely near Lake Michigan.

By Wednesday, Morey said parts of the Chicago area could see up to 4 inches of snowfall, with the highest amounts in the northern suburbs, where there could be lake improvement. Areas along the lake may not see as much debris due to the warm lake temperatures.

The city has more than 200 cars ready to bomb the streets and a supply of more than 400 tons of salt, said Cole Stallard, commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Roads and Sanitation.

With the first snow of the season arriving during his morning drive, Stallard said it’s important to be prepared and give yourself extra time.

“Stay safe and make sure you have your mattresses in the car,” Stallard said. “And make sure you have those conversations with new drivers going to school.”
