How much money should you set aside for your parents?

Jakarta

As a child, it is fitting to be filial to his parents. Usually, one form of service that is often done is to provide financial support. Then, how much money is reasonable set aside for parents?

Financial Planner from the Advisors Alliance Group Indonesia, Andy Nugroho, is of the view that ideally a child fulfills his daily needs first and then allocates some of it for his parents. Do not let it even burden the child.

“Ideally, if the child wants to support the financial needs of his parents, then the child has to fulfill his daily needs first. Especially if the child lives separately from his parents,” said Andy to detikcomSaturday (29/7/2023).

Thus, continued Andy, at least the funds provided are income that has been deducted from the boarding/rental fee, transportation costs, as well as food and daily needs. Moreover, if the child is already married, those needs must be prioritized first.

For those who are married and live separately from their parents, Andy suggests that the percentage be in the range of 5% of salary. Let’s say the child’s salary is IDR 5 million per month, thus the allocation for parents can be around IDR 250 thousand per month.

“However, if the child himself is still single in his daily life and lives with his parents, then of course the percentage given can be greater, so around 20%,” he explained.

Thus, if the child has a salary of Rp. 5 million per month, the amount of money set aside for the parents can reach Rp. 1 million per month. “Because there are not many needs and think of it as helping to bear the daily needs of his family,” he added.

Meanwhile, Financial Planner from Tatadana Consulting, Tejasari Asad assesses that the needs of each family are different, so there is no suggestion as to the benchmark for what percentage of money is allocated to parents.

“We’d better first calculate our daily expenditure needs so we can get the right amount,” said Teja, when contacted separately.

In his opinion, everyone needs to carefully calculate it. Don’t let it, in the end, because you don’t calculate it correctly, it actually becomes a burden for the child so that he can’t live his daily life properly.

“How much salary do we give to our parents, preferably according to our abilities. Don’t let it be burdensome and cause us to suffer,” he concluded.
