How much money do we keep on deposit – Lending

The money that Bulgarians keep in banks is increasing. At the end of March, household deposits reached BGN 62.852 billion.

The amount is equal to 49.9% of GDP, and for a year it grows by 12 percent. This is shown by the most recent data from the monetary statistics of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).

The business has savings amounting to BGN 29.971 billion (23.8% of GDP), which is 16.1% more than in March 2020.

However, deposits of financial corporations decreased to BGN 2.846 billion (2.3% of GDP) or by 14.2% less compared to the same period last year.

In addition to growing savings, Bulgarians are taking out more loans. At the end of March 2021, housing loans amounted to BGN 12.367 billion and increased on an annual basis by 11.9%, according to BNB data.

Consumer loans amount to BGN 12.170 billion and are also growing, but by 5.5 percent, compared to March last year. On an annual basis, other loans, such as those for treatment and education, decreased by 24.6%, reaching BGN 378.5 million.

Loans to “Employers and self-employed persons” decreased by 7.4% per year and at the end of the month amounted to BGN 377.5 million.

Interest rates on loans are expected to rise

Loans to companies increased by 2.7% on an annual basis and at the end of March amounted to BGN 35.765 billion (28.4% of GDP).
