A Chinese man paid up to $2 million a few years ago to get a dog of the Golden Tibetan Mastiff breed. At the time of sale, the dog weighed 90 kilograms and stood 80 centimeters tall.
The term mastiff is used for all large dog breeds, it is also used for this dog which is actually a Tibetan mountain dog or a Himalayan mountain dog. It comes from the nomadic cultures of Tibet, China, India, Mongolia and Nepal.
Legend has it that the Tibetan mastiff is the “dog of God”.
From the name it is clear that the breed has its origins in Tibet, where (even in the Himalayan region) these dogs were used as guardians of livestock as well as the homes of their masters. Until the middle of the 20th century, the breed, also known as Do Khyi, was almost unknown in Europe, and thanks to European breeders, its representatives have not disappeared.
There are several legends about the origin of the mastiff, informs BNR. One of them tells that he arrived in Central Asia after the leader of the Huns, Attila. According to another, the Tibetan mastiff is “God’s dog” because it represents the transformation of a Tibetan priest into a dog.
After the spectacular two million dollar sale, they started breeding this breed of dog, but it turned out to be very expensive to keep. The Tibetan Mastiff is not a dog for everyone, as they require a lot of time to socialize.
