Fuel prices are rising again, which will not be helped by seasonally increased demand. And who knows what will happen to the availability of oil on world markets. If Russia shuts off the gas taps in Europe, it will also be affected by oil and fuel prices. So if we write about a liter of petrol and diesel here for fifty crowns, maybe in a few months we will still laugh at what the golden times were like…
–
From June to September, the state even temporarily reduced the excise tax on petrol from CZK 12.84 to CZK 11.34 per liter and on diesel from CZK 9.95 to CZK 8.45 per liter, which is certainly a commendable step towards motorists that could at least a little relieved. The excise tax on LPG is currently CZK 2.15 per liter.
–
With a high price of input raw material, the state share in fuel prices thus decreases, because with a price of CZK 45 per liter of petrol, the state will receive CZK 19.14 per liter, ie 42.53%, for diesel the share is now 35.32%, ie 16 , 60 CZK. With LPG, 27.57% of each liter flows into the state treasury, but it is only CZK 5.79, ie much less than with conventional fuels.

We have put average fuel prices in Europe at the end of May 2022 in a common table. We list prices from the lowest per liter and we have also added an interesting fact: how many liters you can pump in these countries for a thousand CZK. You can then calculate according to your usual consumption, how much you will drive and how much it will cost you. We have also added a few interesting facts from around the world. You can compare European fuel prices with individual regions. We again drew data mainly from the regularly updated globalpetrolprices.com website.

Well, probably no one is going on holiday to Belarus and Russia this year, but even within the EU countries, prices are very different, mainly due to different local taxes. The EU orders a minimum excise duty of 359 euros per 1,000 liters of gasoline, ie about 8.90 CZK per liter. But most countries have a higher excise tax. In Hungary, you will currently refuel a liter for 30 crowns, in Slovakia by 14 crowns more expensive, as well as in Croatia. Hungarian pumps are thus expected to make an onslaught during the tourist season. Interestingly, Norway, as the leading oil producer in the EU, has the most expensive petrol. But somewhere they have to raise money for those electric car subsidies.
–
And how is it in the world? The situation in Venezuela is still comical, where, thanks to state subsidies, petrol costs 53 pennies per liter. In Libya, a liter of petrol costs 74 pennies and in Iran 1.27 CZK. In the United Arab Emirates, however, a liter currently costs almost 23 crowns due to higher taxes. There are also big differences in the USA, because in California, for example, a liter costs almost 50 crowns, elsewhere it is only around 25 CZK. The average price from the USA is about 29 crowns per liter. In China, a liter of petrol costs CZK 32.60, and in Hong Kong, perhaps the most, even CZK 68.65 per liter. This is due to high taxes and, above all, the necessary margins of gas stations. Already we’ve written about it before. Surprisingly, they have relatively cheap petrol in Japan, a liter there costs CZK 30.45.

Even with diesel, the differences are huge, only the extremes are a little different. Due to lower taxes, Malta currently has the cheapest diesel, followed by Hungary. On the other hand, Norway does not punish motorists so much, while Monaco is not afraid to milk them properly at a price of CZK 57.42 per liter. The EU imposes a mandatory excise duty on diesel of 330 euros per 1,000 liters, ie about 8.2 CZK per liter.
–
The cheapest diesel in the world is Iran, where a liter costs 25 pennies. There are also 53 pennies worth of gasoline in Venezuela. The prices in Saudi Arabia are interesting: while petrol costs almost CZK 15 per liter there, diesel costs less than four crowns. Diesel is very expensive in the USA, where a liter costs an average of over 35 crowns. Diesel is also used as an alternative fuel and drives electric generators, in addition, there is now a supply season for the winter. It is expected that even in the USA, diesel could cost more than 50 crowns per liter before the winter. Once again, Hong Kong leads with prices, where a liter of diesel costs almost 63 crowns, on the contrary, the already mentioned Japan has relatively cheap diesel, a liter there costs about 26.60 CZK.

Liquefied petroleum gas, ie LPG, is a popular alternative fuel mainly in Europe due to its lower tax burden and therefore low price. Usually, LPG costs half as much as gasoline, and it’s more or less the case now. Of course, there are differences mainly according to different tax policies in individual countries.
–
We are surprised that at a time of enormous pressure on ecology and sustainability, which sometimes borders on religious insanity, LPG is not pushed as the fuel of the future. Not only is its incineration environmentally friendly without so many pollutants, but it is also a waste product of oil refining. And it doesn’t have to build a whole new infrastructure and change automotive technology. States also impose an excise duty on LPG, according to EU regulations, a tax of 125 euros (CZK 3,100) per tonne must be levied on it.

Points of Interest
Oil is not just used as a fuel. In Europe, only about 48% of oil is used to produce fuels for land transport, 9% is used by shipping and 5% by air. Almost 16% is consumed by industry and a tenth by energy. Gas is used rather than liquid petroleum products to generate electricity. Services and other sectors, especially research and the pharmaceutical industry, consume almost 6% of oil. The remaining about 6% is for household consumption.
–
In terms of fuel consumption in road transport, more than two thirds are diesel and petrol only less than 24%. In the total volume of only about 2% of fuels, LPG and CNG make up only 0.75%. Just for the sake of interest, electricity accounts for only 0.12% of the total transport performance, at least according to data from 2020.
