How much does the anti-abortion vote weigh?

Ultra-conservatives around the world continually launch anti-abortion crusades. In this way they gain a large number of votes. But the Italian right prefers the ploy. Same objective: to bring the anti-abortionists, the most fundamentalist Catholics, to the polls on their side. But without attracting attention. Declaring in words that they do not want to change law 194, which has regulated the termination of pregnancy in Italy since 1978, but effectively making it impracticable.

The ethical state of the ultra-right

by Massimo Giannini

We already know about the difficulties, the lack of consultants, the little information on contraception – and we are talking about sexuality, a topic that is evidently still taboo. We also know about the high number of conscientious objectors which complicates things once one finds oneself choosing to have an abortion. If a dramatic and painful decision like terminating a pregnancy has to be at the mercy of anti-abortion associations, then we are losing a piece of civilization. Whatever the belief, the vision of the sacredness of life, respecting all sensitivities, can we spare ourselves the ethical state of the extreme right?

Could respect for women’s bodies and their freedom and self-determination in terms of motherhood be up for grabs for an extra vote?

The anti-abortionists are happy and thank the friendly majority. But can we avoid saying that everything was already foreseen, that 194 really wants to invite pro-life people into counseling centers to dissuade people from abortion?

Fetuses as gadgets and shocking photos, this is how the pro-life army enters women’s lives

Raniero La Valle is the Catholic intellectual who physically wrote the first two articles of 194. He reconstructs the mandate that inspired the first articles of the law: no to ideologies, yes to taking the side of women, avoiding the risks of illegal abortion. When asked if, in his vision of him, he is not placing particular emphasis on the part of Catholic culture that is in the law, he replies: “I would say the emphasis on the culture that we consider human.”
