The National Federation of Students in Social Environments (FNEMS) publishes data about the start of the 2024 school year in training centers in the region. She is afraid of the fees that “exacerbate the vulnerability of students and the “inequalities within the education system”.
€3635. This is what a social work student needs to pay, on average, in September to fund training and daily living costs. That is a slight increase of 0.90% compared to the beginning of the school year 2023 scholarship holders have to pay €3,297, or 0.38% more.
« These increases, although small in percentage, are heavily dependent on student budgets, increasing vulnerability and inequality. », Opinions of the National Federation of Students in Social Environments (FNEMS), at the origin of this estimate.

Based on a procedure confirmed by the Federation of General Student Associations (Fage) of which she is an administrator, she calculated the costs of daily life (housing, food, transport, telephone, leisure, etc.) and training.
The first amount to € 1,238 per month (+1.29% compared to 2023), the highest expenditure item was rent at € 563 on average (+2.51%). Training costs are estimated from a panel of 94 social work training centers (EFTS). They amount to €2,397 in total and €2,104 for a scholarship student.

These total costs include entrance exams, registration, and even education fees, which vary greatly by region. If the national average is €777, it is better to live in the Paca region (€396) than in the Pays de la Loire (€1107).
Fnems believes that social work students suffer a double penalty. In addition to being subject to similar vulnerabilities as students in the general population, they are penalized with limited, if any, access to services.
One or more foods were avoided
In terms of food, the difficulty of accessing the university restaurant (RU), for geographical reasons or lack of recognition, leads them to pay an extra €25 per month for food (€293 per month) than those who have access to it. 28% of social work students skip one or more meals during the week. This is higher than the general average for students.
Based on these observations, the FNEMS formulates a series of recommendations:
- expanding the number of scholarship students to reach 1 million beneficiaries;
- Indexing the ceilings for access to scholarships on the minimum wage and adjusting their amount to inflation;
- Establishment of a fixed amount for each region, especially in Île-de-France;
- Open scholarships to non-community students and unfunded doctoral students;
- Skills transfer from health and social training grants to the Crous;
- Establishment of a one-stop shop for student social support through the Student Social File.
The Fnems want ” immediate action to guarantee equality of opportunity » and « to enable all students to continue their studies in dignified conditions ».
