How much does it cost to crash your car into a house and run away?

A driver of a Dutch-registered Mercedes got away with only a fine of BGN 300 and the suspension of his license for 3 months after crashing into a house. The decision is from Tuesday and is of the magistrates from the court in Parvomai, where the action took place.

Shortly before midnight on May 13, 2021, the driver lost control of the vehicle at the intersection between “Bor” and “Buzludzha” streets. Thus, he crashed into and deformed the wall of the house located there, after which he ran away. Neighbors filed a report on phone 112. Uniformed officers arrived at the scene. They found out from the citizens found at the scene of the accident that the hit car had a foreign registration and following the trail of spilled engine oil left by it, they found it parked in the Roma neighborhood of the city with the engine still warm, with traces of external insulation and a piece of plaster.

According to information from a neighbor, law enforcement officials established the identity and phone number of the driver, who was not found at his home, located about 20 meters from the crashed Mercedes. He was invited several times by phone to appear for clarification
on the case, but did not respond with the excuse that he was out of town.

The next day, he arrived alone at the police station in Parvomai, where he gave explanations and admitted that he had caused the accident, after which he fled due to a feeling of fear. He expressed regret for his action. A reference showed that in the period from 2020 to 2021, the driver was repeatedly punished under the ZDvP. For the last incident, he received two fines – BGN 200 and BGN 100, the first being for causing the accident, and the second for his escape.

The decision is subject to appeal before the Administrative Court in the city under the hills.
