A new salary simulator offers more insight into remuneration in education. The simulator gives lateral entrants and staff who want to change positions in education a clearer picture of teacher remuneration. “We want to convince even more people to make the switch,” says Flemish Minister of Education Ben Weyts (N-VA).

The Flemish government and Minister Weyts have been wanting to attract more lateral entrants for years in order to do something about the acute teacher shortage. To make a job in education more attractive for lateral entrants, the seniority scheme has also been adjusted. For example, lateral entrants can now take up to fifteen years of seniority with them for all subjects and positions in education.

Lots of variables

These efforts are starting to bear fruit, but according to Minister Weyts, many lateral entrants only discovered their real salary as a teacher when their first monthly salary was paid. In education, there are many variables that influence wages, such as different salary scales, work regime, exact position and level of education.

With the new salary simulator, developed by the Department of Education and Training, lateral entrants can now gain insight into the gross and net wages they will receive in a relatively quick and easy way. People who already work in education and are interested in another position can also use the simulator. “More clarity from the start can prevent misunderstandings about wages and entice more people to choose our education,” it said.
