Unemployment rate in Poland in August 2024 to 5%.. – the Central Statistics Office reported on Tuesday morning. This result is not surprising – it is consistent with economists’ forecasts and with the preliminary reading released recently published by the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy. Also in July, 5% was recorded, which meant a slight increase compared to 4.9% in June.
Unemployment at 5 percent is the lowest level in 34 years and has remained at this level for several months. However, this is not the best news, because the lack of a recent decline in the unemployment rate is against a seasonal trend – since the demand for seasonal work is usually greater in the summer. The opposite is true at the end of autumn and winter, when companies from industries such as construction, tourism or agriculture limit their activities, so the demand for seasonal workers decreases. In recent years, unemployment in Poland usually decreased in the summer or was stable.
The number of registered unemployed people at the end of August 2024 was 772.3 thousand. compared to 765.4 thousand a month before, ie during the month there was an increase by 6.9 thousand, but during the year there was a decrease by 10.2 thousand. The number of newly registered unemployed people was 100.3 thousand. compared to 107.1 thousand a month earlier and 103.3 thousand a year ago – the Central Statistics Office reported. More than 49 thousand people started working and therefore lost the status of unemployed, ie by 2.3 thousand. less than a year ago at this time.
“The unemployment rate will remain above 5% in the coming months. This is due to restructuring in some workplaces. However, in the long term it will decline. The number of people who is professionally active decreases means that the search for work The Central Statistical Office indicates that the number of job offers reported in the month is 16.1% lower than a year ago created in August than a year ago,” wrote experts from the Polish Economic Institute.
In their morning statement, BM BNP Paribas analysts reminded that the situation on the labor market is getting worse. “Last year’s economic slowdown and the moderate recovery in activity so far is changing to a decline in employment, although its scale is still limited,” he said.
About apparent cooling in Polish labor market This is also confirmed by the data published a few days ago (along with providing statistics on average wages) regarding the number of employees. According to the Office for Central Statistics, employment in the enterprise sector (companies employing at least 10 people) in August income 6,470 thousand full-time positions. This means a year-on-year decline of 0.5%. and by 0.3 percent on a monthly basis. This was one of the biggest monthly declines in the number of employees during this period in years.
This could be influenced by, among others: layoffs announced in the media in large international companies (but there were also group layoffs in large state-owned companies, including Poczta Polska and PKP Cargo) , due, among others, to weak external demand.
