When we talk about the original The Binding of Isaac we go back to 2011, but many years have passed since that version, now and for this guide we are talking about the most popular and well-known version, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirthfrom 2014 and its subsequent expansions such as Afterbirth, Afterbirth+ and Repentance. All of these have brought great news, and that is exactly what we are going to see in this guide, the main content of each DLC or expansion.
Base content
Rebirth, being a remake of the original, ceasing to be a flash game, brought several new features, such as 4 new characters compared to the original game (Eden, Lazarus, Azazel and The Lost), a dozen bosses, more than 100 objects, trinkets and a big visual change to the game, something similar to what we can see today in fact. After this came 3 expansions:
Afterbirth (2015)
We start with Afterbirth, the game’s big first expansion:
- Greed Mode, a new game mode that also includes a new game ending and several unlockables.
- Blue Uterus: a new floor with a new final boss and ending.
- Daily game challenges, with online rankings.
- Two new characters, Lilith and Keeper.
- 95 new items and 29 new trinkets.
- New types of chests, pills and cards
- 10 new challenges.
Afterbirth+ (2017)
The content included in Afterbirth+ was the following:
- 4 new bosses (and one more in current patches).
- 3 new transformations.
- 104 new items and trinkets (in later patches, more items added).
- A bestiary that will show detailed information about the monsters.
- Two new characters: Apollyonand later added The Forgotten.
Repentance (2021)
Finally, Isaac’s last major expansion, which includes the mod Antibirth in full plus some additions and adjustments:
- The complete The Binding of Isaac: Antibirth fan mod
- Renewed cooperative mode, for up to 4 players and with characters instead of babies.
- 130+ new items
- A new path and two final bosses with their own endings (one from Antibirth)
- More than 100 new enemies
- 25 new bosses
- 19 new characters (Bethany and Jacob and Esau, plus 17 tainted or corrupted characters)
- 10 new challenges
- 234 new achievements, now adding a total of 637
- More than 5,000 new room and floor designs
