How long the coronavirus persists on the skin – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

A new study by scientists from the University of Kyoto Prefecture has proven that the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains active on human skin for 9-10 hours.

They conducted a series of experiments to create a model that allows the safe replication of clinical studies of pathogens on human skin, and determined the stability of SARS-CoV-2 on human skin by comparing it to influenza A virus.

According to a study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, viruses inactivate more quickly on human skin than on other surfaces such as stainless steel, glass or plastic. As RG wrote earlier, the virus can remain active on plastic for more than three days.

The new coronavirus has proven to be more tenacious than the flu virus. SARS-CoV-2 was active on human skin for up to ten hours, while the influenza virus died within two hours.

In favorable conditions, for example, in mucus, the coronavirus survives even longer, up to 12 hours.

During the experiment, the researchers were convinced that the disinfectants do an excellent job with both those and other viruses: when the skin is treated with ethanol, they die within 15 seconds.

Thus, the scientists conclude that the 9-hour survival rate of SARS-CoV-2 on human skin may increase the risk of contact transmission compared to other viruses, thereby accelerating the pandemic. And to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection, you need to follow very simple rules: wash your hands and treat them with disinfectants.
