A few days after his loss to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the Australian Open 2020, Roger Federer announced the unfortunate news. He explained that under medical supervision, he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
“My right knee has been bothering me for a little while”, Federer wrote on an Instagram post. “I was hoping it would go away, but after examination and discussion with my team, I decided yesterday to undergo arthroscopic surgery in Switzerland. After the procedure, the doctors confirmed it was the right thing to do and are very confident in a full recovery. “

Despite the surgery, Federer was confident of joining the Tour at the Wimbledon Championships. But, a little later, his legs started to show abnormalities such as swelling, so he had to have his second surgery.
“A few weeks ago, after experiencing a setback during my initial rehabilitation, I had to have an additional rapid arthroscopy on my right knee,” said Federer. noted on Twitter.
Therefore, he has decided to devote his entire 2020 season to recovery. He didn’t miss too much action, however, as even tennis had been on a standstill for six months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Unlike traditional surgery, arthroscopic surgery is less invasive and efficient. To work out, doctors make a small arthroscopic incision in the knee to repair the damage.

Instead of the planned 2020 Wimbledon, Federer returned 13 months after his first right knee surgery in Doha. However, after a few minutes on the pitch, it looked like he had never left.
Previously, in 2016, Federer had left knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. After that he made one of the most memorable comebacks, winning the 2017 Australian Open title.

Will Roger Federer return in 2022? If so when?
In 2021, the now 40-year-old achieved notable performances. Federer’s best result came at Wimbledon, where he reached the quarter-finals.
Since then, Federer has not returned to the Tour. Instead, he planned his third operation and ended his tennis season 2021.

Despite the three surgeries, Federer’s passion for the sport is eternal. The same passion gives him a chance to return to the courts, which would otherwise be difficult given his physical condition.
