New Year’s Eve is not a public holiday, but December 31st is not a normal working day either. How long are the supermarkets around Rewe and Co. in NRW open today?

Hamm – It’s almost New Year’s Eve. While the Christmas holidays have already promised a full stomach, it’s a tradition for many people to refill their plates at the turn of the year. But sumptuous dishes require a thoughtful purchase: How long will supermarkets and discounters in North Rhine-Westphalia be open on 31 December 2022?

Supermarkets in NRW: how long Rewe and Co. are open

There is no clear rule on how long supermarkets and discounters like Rewe, Edeka, Lidl and Aldi are open on New Year’s Eve, at least not in NRW. In Bremen, Hesse and Thuringia, for example, shops have to close at 2pm. The store opening law is a state matter.

Just because the rules in North Rhine-Westphalia are more flexible doesn’t mean that supermarkets and discounters open and close at the usual times. In fact, stores are even more likely to have different opening hours.

Branches can decide for themselves when to close. The conventional opening hours, some of which last until 11pm, are probably only carried out by very few branch managers to their employees. For this reason, most shops close earlier than usual. Most supermarkets, discounters or other shops close between 2pm and 4pm on 31 December. Next year will be different. So New Year’s Eve (2023) falls on a Sunday: the shops must close as usual.

Supermarkets and their opening hours on New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2023) – that’s what Rewe says

Some supermarket chains have already taken a stand and answered the question about store opening times. Most Rewe markets will close on 31 December 2022 between 4-6pm, according to a spokesperson for the broadcaster rtl extension announced. However, the opening hours always depend on “local conditions”, so the bottom line is that each branch decides for itself.

A similar picture applies to other retail chains: Aldi’s main opening hours on New Year’s Eve are 7am to 4pm. In the branches, on the other hand, a notice will inform customers of the actual opening hours. Rossmann customers, on the other hand, must pay particular attention. According to the drugstore group, some branches close as early as 1pm.

Like other supermarkets, Edeka does not have uniform opening hours on New Year’s Eve. What the supermarket certainly has, however, is a new reusable system called “regood” – Edeka wants to make a contribution to environmental protection and sustainability.

If you want to get fresh rolls from the bakery on New Year’s morning, you should also keep an eye on the store’s opening act.
