Hi first :),
I am currently in the 8th grade of a high school and I am pretty good at school, and I would like to go to the USA or possibly Canada in the 10th grade for 1 year. I know that is still a little way off, But still, I’m already thinking about it. I want to go to the USA (/ Canada) to be able to speak English fluently, meet many new people, make good contacts, become more independent and self-confident, see and experience new things, a new one Getting to know the school system, etc. The problem is my parents. When I told them about my wish it was immediately “NO”. Why? They mean:
1. They say they don’t like the US, and since you can’t choose where to go, I’m bound to end up in a bad area or something.
2. The USA is too far away, I’ve never been outside of Europe and it should stay that way until I’m 18, they say …
3. The costs. They would be much too high and would only go to money-rich organizations anyway ..
4 I would be much too young in 10th grade (i.e. at 15) to be somewhere else on my own for so long …
5. I am not allowed to interrupt school (it’s not that I would go to high school in America or anything). They say I should go through school and after graduation I can do whatever I want … But I should anyway with 17 Abi from that …
About the costs (that costs 8000-12000 euros, right?): Actually, money is not a big problem in my family, so my parents could theoretically pay it.
I also have some saved money (over 1000 euros) in my account, I’ve always saved it for no reason, now I know what it could be good for: D
I would (even now) start with small part-time jobs (like delivering newspapers) to earn a little money to spice up what I have saved.
Maybe I’ll get a scholarship too (but unlikely)
Now my questions:
Can you help me convince my parents somehow?
Have you ever done a year abroad in the USA / Canada or are you currently doing one and what kind of experiences have you had?
How much does a year abroad cost exactly?
Is there somehow the possibility to do a year abroad with horses / on a ranch?
What is the chance of a scholarship?
Do you really have to repeat the class after the year abroad?
. .
I know there are a lot of questions, but I still hope that you can somehow help me.
Thanks in advance: D, Moon
