How Latvia’s Hay Shortage Reflects Agricultural Challenges in the EU

“Today I listened to the news, at that time people from Latgale were talking – they lack, there is no feed for livestock. But why is hay being sold for import abroad, could there be a limit? The solidarity aspect – those who promise to liquidate the farms, at the same time promise that their little hay will sell out to Poland, which in turn is ready to buy rolls of hay, because they too have a crop failure. Why is our farmer not ready to sell to a neighbor for whom it is a matter of survival? Such a question was asked in the TV24 program “On the Line” to the Minister of Agriculture Didzis Šmitas.

We are not alone in these extraordinary circumstances – Southern Europe is also struggling – Spain and Portugal are struggling with drought, Italy had drought, then floods, Finland, like us, and in principle all the Member States who spoke supported these derogations.

The minister understands very well, “by the time we amend the strategic plans, everything will have ended for us a long time ago, so we make our own national decisions. We must not allow a situation where there is nothing to feed the animals in animal husbandry.”

Schmidt says: “I am absolutely convinced that at the moment, as long as the action is reasonable in terms of crisis management, the EC recognizes these steps as correct.

You cannot wait for the consensus decisions of the 27 countries sometime in the fall.”

We will know the losses of the grain industry closer to autumn.

It has been a crazy year, the situation will be difficult, but the situation must be resolved – we must approach it rationally, and make decisions with an overarching goal, so that afterwards we are stronger, not weaker, said the minister.
