How Kylie Jenner’s Plastic Surgery Reveals the Pressure of Fame and Beauty Standards

Kylie Jenner’s boobs and the question: How much truth can it be?

Kylie Jenner’s boobs bother me. That’s a sentence I never thought I’d bang on the keyboard. But I’m not just concerned about whether celebs have to go public with their plastic surgery, but also that in this case I can personally understand why Kylie didn’t do it.

Kylie Jenner is the youngest member among the Kardashian sisters. When she was 16, she sprayed on her lips and said forever that they only look fuller because she smeared lipstick over them. Conveniently, she also started her own make-up brand right away so that others can do puffy lips too. Although that didn’t work, of course, she earned a fortune with it.

Now she has also told the family’s reality show that she had her breasts done when she was 19. That doesn’t surprise anyone, because anyone with eyes in their heads could see that there were suddenly more curves. And yet the gossip columns were full of her “confession”. Mainly because she denied it for years.

Kylie Jenner told what everyone already knew: Not everything about her is pure nature.

That begs the eternal question: do celebs have to go public with it when everything about them isn’t natural anymore? I think it depends. Just like us, celebs have a right to privacy. But there is one exception: when the change is obvious and someone suddenly looks completely different.

Just like when they edit their own photos and don’t own it, celebs set false expectations at some point. They also contribute to the fact that cosmetic surgery is still considered something to be ashamed of. And at some point they lose all credibility and become a joke. Kylie’s sister Khloé is sad proof of that.

Khloé Kardashian is now almost notorious for her enthusiasm for Photoshop.

In Kylie’s case there is an additional point: she profited from her lie. Just like with her lipstick, she denied everything at first. A “Victoria’s Secret” bra is “to blame”. Then her period. And then a cream that she immediately sold herself.

As stupid as that was, I can understand why she didn’t publicly admit to her surgery at the time. Because I also had my breasts operated on when I was 19. Without going into too much detail: I wasn’t happy, I had the opportunity to change it and I did it. I didn’t even tell a handful of people at the time. I wasn’t ashamed, but I was still uncomfortable. As a young woman, I didn’t want something so intimate to become public. Today, almost 20 years later, I really don’t care about the opinions of others. My money, my body, my choice.

But in Kylie Jenner’s case, it might not have been entirely her decision. And that makes the whole thing almost tragic. When the first episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians hit TV screens in 2007, Kylie was thrust into the limelight at age 9 and into a world that had little to do with reality, naturalness, or a healthy self-image. While all other family members were grown and approved of this show, she and her sister Kendall were children judged and sexualized by strangers from the moment they met.

Neither of them had a chance to escape their family’s impossible ideal of beauty. While Kendall started a career as a model at the age of 14 thanks to mom’s contacts, Kylie was laughed at by the same mom on camera when she tried to follow her sister on the catwalk.

Poor, poor Kylie? Not quite. I’m not going to blow the “pity trumpet” out loud for her here. She and her family are financing a life of luxury with their highly polished vicious circle by operating on their own insecurities and happily passing them on to their fans. And probably to their own children too.

Speaking of which: Here Kylie surprises me with her “surgical confession”. She regrets her interventions and she hopes that her daughter Stormi will not follow the same path: “It would break my heart if she had it done at 19.” Because: “I wish I could be her and start all over again. Then I wouldn’t change anything.”

Let’s hope that in a few years Stormi won’t be saying the same thing about herself, but will really be able to make her own well-considered decision if she ever wants to change something about herself. Otherwise we will definitely find out. Unfortunately.
