The LPF Executive Committee together with the AFA unanimously approved the format for next year. By 2028 they aim to have 22 teams. Here, all the details.
Representatives of the clubs of the Professional football championship gathered in a new conclave of the Executive Committee, in the building that the AFA owns in Ezeiza, and they unanimously defined the form of the dispute for next year’s tournaments. The directors agreed and promoted the repetition of the tournament format and, above all, they all agreed to apply the system of three descents (two for the averages and one for the general table), so that the reduction is gradual. The goal is that in the 2028 season there will be 22 teams in the First Division. The only club missing was River. In this sense, for the 2024 season there will be two relegations for the general classification and one for the average.
The difference from this year is that the Professional League tournament will be played first and then the Cup. The 2023 season will start on the weekend of January 27 with the Binance Tournament 2023 and will end on the weekend of August 5. For its part, the Binance Cup will begin the week of August 20, the playoffs will be played on December 3 and 10 and the final on December 16. The end of the season will be on 23 December with the Champions Trophy, and if a previous tie-break is needed, it will be played on 20 December.
Additionally, there will be two team classics throughout the season, where the home status in the Binance Tournament will be reversed in the Binance Cup.
The draw for the matches will take place on Thursday 3, at 13:00, at the Julio Grondona Complex, in Ezeiza.
On the other hand, it has been reported that the competition rules will be distributed to the clubs, which provides for fines and penalties that will be applied to entities that do not respect the established protocols. According to the publication of the Lega Professionisti: “This will be an innovative measure that has been worked on in the last three years”.
There was also talk of the trophy that will be played in January in Abu Dhabi, the Argentine Super Cup which will see Boca (champion of the professional championship) and Patronato (champion of the Argentine Cup) as protagonists. The leaders have decided to study the options of the teams that will play that game in the Middle East.
