How Haas Team Boss Guenther Steiner Rules Out Max Verstappen’s Impact on Team Performance

today, 11:25 | by Danaé Lachenal

Guenther Steiner, Haas’ team boss, has spoken out about the possible performance of Max Verstappen in a Haas car. In an interview with The Athletic, Steiner revealed that even with Verstappen behind the wheel, the team would not be able to achieve victories due to the lack of a winning car.

The Italian team boss indicated that if he had the choice, he would prefer to work with another Red Bull Racing employee. “I would choose Adrian Newey because I am sure he can build a winning car,” said Steiner. ‘Even if you put Verstappen in our car, we wouldn’t win. “I think Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen could win races if we had a Red Bull,” he added.

Verstappen cannot save Haas

The statement is notable considering that Verstappen is currently considered one of the top drivers in Formula 1 due to his dominance in the 2023 season. However, Steiner seems to emphasize that a driver’s performance is highly dependent on the quality of the car he drives. The Haas team is known for its performance challenges, with a car that is not considered competitive compared to the top teams.

Haas finished last in the constructors’ championship in 2023. The American team only managed to score twelve points with its two drivers Magnussen and Hülkenberg. This is a drop compared to the 2022 season where the team managed to take eighth place with 37 points.

Steiner at Red Bull

Steiner himself once worked for the Red Bull team in NASCAR. Looking back on his time at Red Bull, Steiner reflected proudly on his team’s contributions to the sport. ‘We managed to add a lot of technology and engineers to the sport. A few people recognized that after I left. You don’t have to get credits. I think we did a lot of what is now normal in NASCAR,” he explains. The team boss also revealed why he permanently left Red Bull in 2008. ‘We didn’t agree about the future. I had a plan, but they didn’t agree with it. That’s why we parted ways, it’s as simple as that,” the Italian said.
