A Soviet-era aircraft will be found in September in Greece, specifically at the Tanagra Air Base.
This is the Antonov An-26 which was manufactured from 1969 to 1986 in the Soviet Union and will be on display at the Athens Flying Week (September 14-15).
Obviously, the civilian and military aircraft does not belong to Russia, whose aircraft, due to the sanctions from the war in Ukraine, cannot make such “demonstrations” on European soil.
According to the Pacemaker, this particular aircraft wears the Romanian coat of arms, in all probability Romania procured it from Moscow during the Ceausescu era.
With the presence of the Antonov in Greece, the column reminds us that our country, in the context of the major armament programs of the previous decades, came close to acquiring this type of aircraft, but was “saved” by superior political interventions.
Greece therefore intended to procure four Antonov transport aircraft, during the ministry of Akis Tsohatzopoulos, just as it had then procured from Russia anti-missile systems, armored personnel carriers, the beastly Zubr-type landing craft (one was Ukrainian).
Finally, the Antonovs were cut in KYSEA by Simitis, G. Papandreou and Thodoros Pangalos…
