How Former US Coach Thomas Rongen Turned the World’s Worst Soccer Team into Winners

The cinema year begins in a funny way: At the lowest point in his career, the former successful US coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) is supposed to prepare a loser soccer team on the island paradise of American Samoa for World Cup qualification…

Traumatized team

Only one goal should be scored. But with lots of beach, sun and palm trees, this is no easy feat. The team is also traumatized: they lost 31-0 to Australia in a legendary World Cup qualifier, which is still in their jerseys.

Clumsiness but team spirit

So how do you turn the worst soccer team in the world into winners? In order for the clumsy bunch to become a real team in time, everyone has to surpass themselves, because only together can they achieve their big dream of scoring.

After a true story

Inspired by a true story, director Taika Waititi creates a good-humored culture clash comedy about a hapless football team that’s not just about football, with a perfect mix of emotion and humor. However, you don’t learn much about the players, nor about their relationships with each other, except perhaps for defender Jaiyah, a man who lives as a woman – a completely normal phenomenon in Samoa, by the way, called fa’aafin. This is the third gender of Polynesia.
