The Observatory of the Environment in Brittany has succeeded in measuring the carbon footprint of its inhabitants: on average, a Breton is responsible for the emission of 9.1 tonnes of greenhouse gases, half of which abroad. The opportunity to take a closer look at where some of the products you consume in Brittany come from.
Breton t-shirts far from being “Made in France”
The clothes you buy are among the more outsourced products: almost all of them are produced abroad. A third of their carbon footprint comes from Asia, half of which comes from China. Only a very small part of the clothes you buy are produced, and therefore pollute, in France.
The shoe is predominantly Asian
Shoes don’t put on a better picture than your clothes: they’re even more relocated! More than half of the shoes you buy pollute in Asia. Once again, the Chinese market predominates, since it represents half of the Asian share, which itself represents half of the carbon footprint of your shoes, ahead of the African continent.
The car, more European than you think
When you buy a vehicle, it is more difficult to say what is behind its carbon footprint: extraction of raw materials, manufacture of parts, assembly… There are multiple stages. Despite everything, the pollution generated by the purchase of your car is less relocated than that of your clothes or your shoes: half of the emissions are European, while Asia represents “only” a quarter.
