High exposure to sunlight during the day reduces the risk of depression by 20%. Modern material civilization has turned the human biological system upside down. The human brain has evolved to work best with bright light during the day and little light at night. However, bright lights that brighten the night are weakening this function.
Professor Sean Kane, from Australia’s Monash School of Psychological Sciences, said: “Humans today are challenging this biology by spending about 90% of their day under electric lighting that is too dark during the day and too bright at night for their natural light-dark cycle.” “This is confusing our bodies and harming our health,” he said.
In fact, according to a study published in the academic journal Nature Mental Health, it was found that excessive exposure to night light increases the risk of mental disorders such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder, and the likelihood of self-harm. Additionally, increasing sunlight exposure during the day was shown to reduce the risk of mental illness.
The research team led by Professor Kane examined the level of exposure to light, sleep, physical activity, and mental health among 86,772 people belonging to the UK Biobank.
The study found that people exposed to a lot of light at night had a 30% increased risk of depression, while people exposed to a lot of sunlight during the day had a 20% reduced risk of depression. Similar results were found for self-injurious behavior, psychosis, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The effects of nighttime light exposure were not related to demographic characteristics, physical activity, season, or employment status. “The findings were consistent even when shift work, sleep, urban versus rural residence, and cardiometabolic health were taken into account,” the researchers said.
These findings suggest that the simple habit of avoiding light at night and seeking out bright light during the day could be an effective non-pharmacological means of reducing serious mental health problems.
“If people understand that their light exposure patterns have a powerful impact on their mental health, they can take some simple steps to optimize their well-being,” the researchers said. “Avoid bright light during the day and darkness at night. “It’s about living,” he said.
