When you think of hormone-producing organs, muscles rarely come to mind. In terms of mass, they are the largest part of the body that releases messenger substances. More than 600 of them are known, they are called myochines.
“Above all, they have a positive effect on a wide range of bodily functions and on the heart,” says Christian Schmied, professor of preventive cardiology and sports medicine at the University Heart Center in Zurich. “And the nice thing is that through sport you can make sure that these messenger substances are released more often.” Many positive effects for the cardiovascular system are attributed to them, even if the details are often not yet known.
