How – even – better to differentiate our waste?

Separate collection of this waste is a crucial issue for a city like Poitiers from an environmental and financial point of view. Collection and recovery have a cost, because every waste entrusted to the community can be traced. Some objects are collected in a special way: glass, batteries, batteries, fabrics and shoes, medicines (Cyclamate in pharmacies).
Grand Poitiers wants to harmonize and simplify waste treatment. Basically, each household will separate their waste between the household rubbish (grey waste), the separate collection (yellow waste) and the composter (made available to Pittavians).

What happens to our waste?

There are two waste recovery channels in Grand Poitiers. The waste from the yellow bin is sent to the Saint Eloi sorting center, in an automatic sorting chain. The waste once sorted is resold, which offers a recipe for Grand Poitiers.
Household garbage waste is sent to the Saint Eloi energy recovery unit to power the ovens. 88% of Grand Poitiers waste has a second life.

How to separate waste?

In 13 communes of Grand Poitiers, inhabitants are offered the supply of an individual composter and a free organic seal with assembly and explanations for use.
What to put in the recycling bin (yellow bin)? Receives all packaging (food trays, yogurt pots, empty cans, aluminum foil, metal cans, plastic bottles, food cartons, paper, cardboard, etc.). Various packaging plastics are accepted, provided they are not too dirty or dangerous. Since these are machines that sort the different types of waste, it is not necessary to nest the packages, but it is possible to crush them to save space.
Anything that does not enter the household rubbish bin or the separate collection bin must be sent to private collections or to the separate collection centre. Grand Poitiers will set up a mobile recycling center in March 2023 in the city center, then in collective housing areas, in communes more than 15 km away from a recycling center.

Reduce our waste generation

When it comes to waste generation, we are all actors. Our consumption choices have a direct and visible impact on our waste generation. Buying durable foods in bulk by taking your own containers drastically reduces our packaging. The “Stop pub” also affects the reduction in the consumption of paper, a raw material whose prices have skyrocketed.
Composting (for organic waste and green waste) becomes mandatory with the EGalim law on January 1, 2024. Collective and individual composters in Grand Poitiers will contribute significantly to reducing the volume of waste. Today, 30% of the contents of the bin is made up of organic matter which can be recovered in a composter.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are the three golden rules. An object that still works can find a second life in the circular economy.
