How Dutch Households are Benefitting from Lower Energy Bills in January 2024

15 Feb 2024 at 00:03

The energy bill of an average household was 12 percent lower in January than a year earlier. But we are not cheaper than in recent months, because at the end of 2023 the energy bill was even lower than last month.

How much you spend on your energy bill varies per household. The size of the household, how well the home is insulated and heating behavior, among other things, influence energy consumption. But almost all Dutch households benefit from the fact that the variable rates for gas and electricity are lower than a year earlier.

In January, the months-long decline in delivery rates came to an end. Energy is still cheaper than a year earlier.

Not all energy bill amounts were lower in January than a year ago. For example, the tax on gas went up. Transport costs for electricity and gas were also higher than a year earlier. But to promote the switch from gas to electricity, the tax on electricity did decrease.
