How does PASOK see the election of Donald Trump in the USA –

The leadership of Harilaou Trikoupi joins Donald Trump in the forces that use cheap rhetoric of populism and conspiracy and express revisionism at the international level. For the promotion of such forces in the government space, according to PASOKthe catchment area for voters, both in America and Europe, is social inequality and growing poverty.

In this context, with his re-election as a starting point Donald Trump in the USA, the president of PASOK-KINAL Nikos Androulakis foresees that there will be chain reactions and developments (domino effect) in geopolitical issues and especially “in the most critical one at this time, which is the massacre in Palestine, in Gaza, which is what what is more tragic happening in humanity at this moment”.

At the same time, however, the president of PASOK-KINAL considers that the European Union, de facto and under the pressure of the effects that political decisions of D. Trump may have on the economic relations between Europe and the USA, has the opportunity (possibility) to strengthen the European social model and move towards a more autonomous (vis-à-vis the USA) action, with the creation of a European army and the formation of a unified security and defense policy. This possibility is a ray of optimism for the leadership of Harilaou Trikoupis…

According to the analysis of Nikos Androulakis, some conclusions have already been drawn from the way Donald Trump governed in his first term (2017-2021) in the White House. As Nikos Androulakis explains, Trump’s first term has shown that:
“he despises Europe and international organizations and that is problematic and that he likes to talk to revisionist leaders, – and Putin and Erdogan. You remember that at the end of his term he also made a move with Kim Jong Un in North Korea. The way he handles some things will definitely cause a domino effect on geopolitical issues and the most critical one at this time, which is the massacre in Palestine, in Gaza, which is the most tragic thing happening right now in humanity” (P/ S Sky-6 November 2024).

Setting the context in which politicians and forces with characteristics such as those of the newly elected US president develop and claim a governmental role, Nikos Androulakis points out the following: “In Western-style free societies, inequalities and the increase of people at risk of poverty and social exclusion create a huge pool for anyone who expresses such traits, such as Mr. Trump. We have similar cases in Europe, of more or less the same rhetoric. It is an audience vulnerable to conspiracies and populism and we must immediately – at least we in Europe which is the space of our political action – strengthen the European social model, development for the many so that inequalities are reduced, there is serious health and education”.

Regarding the direction of a self-reliant and economically/productively autonomous Europe, he observes that “the story of the US-China conflict has been developing for several years. Indeed, Mr. Trump is always in favor of escalation, compared to the Democrats, but this opens a large window of opportunity in Europe in economic and geopolitical terms in relation to this confrontation. A few years ago when we were talking about a Euro army, everyone despised us. Now most governments point to the need for a complementary troop to NATO, so that Europe can acquire its own autonomous forces.” And he adds: “Europe, for better or worse, will be forced to break the regime of unanimity on economic and fiscal matters, such as the big funds, the European Sovereignty Fund, to invest in the productive base, to bring back structures that have gone to China and other countries, in order to have economic and productive autonomy. In other words, Europe cannot want 27 out of 27 votes – and Orbán blackmails us on one, Malta on the other – and we cannot form a unified tax policy. So, there is a window of opportunity, there is a table that discusses these things pan-European, while they were once taboo. So let’s not be too optimistic, but let’s be optimistic.”

At the same time, in his position on the result of the American elections and what will happen next, the press representative of PASOK-KINAL Kostas Tsoukalas emphasized that the election of Donald Trump marks a change in the politics of the United States. He pointed out that what he has said he has put into practice, then we will have a restrictive policy in terms of the external line, trade and also investments (MEGA TV-6.111.2024).

In fact, he explained that the imposition of tariffs will put pressure on Europe’s fiscal situation, in countries such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain, which “have a highly dependent relationship with the US, but our country will also be greatly affected.”

He considers it necessary for our country to have “a ready plan to push for exemptions from tariffs on Greek products”, while warning that “there is a risk, if China finds a wall, due to the trade war that Trump will probably open, to direct its products to the Eurozone and this will put pressure on our own markets”. To add: “You know, our country’s markets are not fortified against unfair competition practices.”

Regarding Donald Trump’s positions on foreign policy and energy issues, Kostas Tsoukalas emphasized that if there is a “withdrawal” of the US from the international security architecture, measures will have to be taken. He thus presented the position of PASOK-KINAL “for Europe to proceed with the creation of a Euro army and the acceleration of the formation of a unified security and defense policy”.
