How does Hogwarts Legacy play on Nintendo Switch? The view of Digital Foundry specialists

Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest releases of 2023 and looks especially good on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Previous generation consoles have a more difficult time handling the game.

Having ported the game from PS5 to PS4 and from Xbox Series to Xbox One, developers Avalanche Software and Portkey Games decided to make a special version for Nintendo Switch, and this is a serious challenge. Instead of taking the easy route and just introducing a cloud version, they tried to create a real port.

The conclusions of Digital Foundry experts are as follows.

Hogwarts Legacy looks completely different on Switch than it does on larger consoles. The game has long loading screens and has completely lost real-time lighting and even some environmental elements. The game tries to maintain 30fps, which is rare, and most often reaches 25fps. The resolution is dynamic and sometimes completely devoid of anti-aliasing, which is why it looks “angular”. Both the portable and docked versions target 720p, but the lowest is 360p.

Dock – 540-720p Portable – 360-720p

Overall, this is a bold port that allows Switch fans to get one of the biggest games out there without having to play in the cloud.
