How Does Corona Virus Impact the Brain?

Jakarta

Corona virus COVID-19 not only attacks breathing. Corona virus is now known to have an impact on neurological problems.

Quoted from BBC, stroke, delirium, anxiety, confusion, and fatigue all list Corona patients’ neurological complaints.

As Paul Mylrea experienced, it was initially difficult to imagine that he had a severe stroke caused by a Corona virus infection.

Paul’s first stroke occurred while he was being treated at University College Hospital, England. A potentially deadly blood clot in Paul was found in his lungs and legs, so he was given blood-thinning medication.

A few days later he was reported to have had a stroke the second time, it was even worse and was immediately transferred to another hospital. Consultant neurologist Dr. Arvind Chandratheva explained that Paul had a slight memory disorder.

“Paul has a blank expression on his face. He can only see on one side and he doesn’t know how to use his cellphone or remember the passcode, his cellphone,” explained Dr. Arvind.

Not long after recovering, Paul suffered stroke acute again due to blood clots. This makes the vital areas of Paul’s brain have difficulty receiving blood flow.

“I have never seen the level of blood clotting before, something about his body’s response to Corona infection has caused his blood to become very sticky,” said Dr. Arvind Chandratheva.

Within two weeks, a neurologist at one of the UK hospitals treated six Corona virus patients COVID-19 who had a severe stroke. One that triggers a stroke is an overreaction by the immune system that causes inflammation in the body and brain.

Chandratheva explained that most of Paul’s brain damage had an impact on his vision, memory and speech. Severe strokes experienced by Paul at that time were even called less likely to survive.

Study of the impact of the Corona virus on the brain

A study in Lancet Psychiatry found brain complications in 125 seriously ill Corona virus patients at a hospital in the UK. Nearly half had strokes due to blood clots while others experienced brain inflammation, psychosis, or symptoms similar to dementia.

One of the study’s authors, Prof. Tom Solomon of the University of Liverpool, said the Corona virus did indeed cause brain problems.

“It is clear now that this virus does indeed cause problems in the brain, whereas initially we thought it was all about the lungs. Partly caused by lack of oxygen to the brain,” explained Prof. Tom.

“But it seems that there are many other factors, such as the problem of blood clotting and the hyper-inflammatory response of the immune system. We also have to ask whether the virus itself infects the brain,” continued Prof. Tom.
