The coronavirus has rolled over New York like a steamroller. 32,000 New Yorkers have succumbed to Covid-19 lung disease. For five months the city that never sleeps came to an almost complete standstill. The city’s economic pillars collapse. Around 3,000 shops close, including almost 1,000 restaurants. And while mass bankruptcies, unemployment and evictions increase, crime rises dramatically. Now wealthy New Yorkers in particular are fleeing in droves. Between March and May alone, 420,000 people left the city, many of them permanently.
