The conversation of children’s wishes
One misconception about the program is that health care professionals determine whether or not the desire to have children can be satisfied. “We don’t determine if clients can get pregnant. We make them aware of what a possible pregnancy means now and in the future,” says Waterland.
“Suppose your client already has problems and is also suffering from an involuntary pregnancy, then you will end up in the rain. Especially if it is not about having a child at all.”
There are touching stories where women have aborted multiple times because it is repaid.
Self-determination and freedom of choice
Human rights and reproductive rights form the basis of Nu Niet Zwanger’s working method. This means that women and men of childbearing age have the right to freely and responsibly choose their children, the number of children and when they want to have children, without any pressure, coercion, discrimination or violence. The NNZ guide is always voluntary and stops when a client wishes, the coordinators explain.
A “conversation of desires” is about knowledge, emotions, context, responsibility and money. “Get the piece of knowledge,” says Geers. “Aid and health care providers sometimes fail to check whether clients are aware of how certain contraceptives work. There are countless examples showing this was not the case. Women who only took the pill after intercourse or clients who talk of the morning-after pill instead of the contraceptive pill. There was also a case where a woman got pregnant because her husband realized he had to take the pill. “
The pill, nuvaring or condoms require “commitment,” which is sometimes difficult for people in vulnerable circumstances to fulfill.
Contraceptives require knowledge
If a client does not wish to have children and opts for contraception, NNZ also offers financial support. “Clients can’t always afford contraception. There are touching stories of women who have abortions multiple times because it is reimbursed. Short-acting contraceptives, such as the pill, nuvaring or condoms, require ‘commitment’ and knowledge of the substance. Something that people in vulnerable circumstances and the problems of the day can sometimes find difficult to achieve. “
“A long-acting contraceptive easily costs more than a hundred dollars. If you have it hospitalized, it also costs you the deductible. That’s why it’s nice that there are resources in the program to offer different forms of contraception,” says Geers. .
Sterilization after caesarean section
NNZ works with a follow-up system that tracks what type of contraceptive a person is using and when it needs to be replaced. Geers shares the heartbreaking case of a homeless, dependent woman who faced an unintended pregnancy and decided to give the baby up for adoption. “She really wanted to be spayed and then she came to us via the gynecologist. We were able to make sure she was spayed immediately after the caesarean section as she wished. We see in our practice what a huge impact an unintended pregnancy has. And also the relief that it has. it gives you take control of your desire to have children. “
