A new book is coming in the popular How do I survive-series. Writer Francine Oomen has announced this.

In the original series (released between 1998 and 2015) a girl is followed in her puberty. In the new book, the main character Rosa will be somewhere in her twenties or around thirty years old, Oomen says in a message on TikTok.

Each book in the series deals with a different theme facing aging Rosa, from the first kiss to her changed relationship with her parents. For many children, the series was such a support in their insecure puberty.

Blown away by comments

The series, with illustrations by Annet Schaap, has been awarded numerous prizes. Also, some books have been used as the basis for musicals and a TV series.

The last for now How do I survive-book dates from 2015, in which life with divorced parents is central. Oomen has decided to revive the series because of what she sees in the circle of friends of her children, who are now in their twenties.

“There you see a lot of depression and burn-outs. It is quite a tough time for them,” she says when asked. To gain more insight into the lives of people in their twenties in 2022, Oomen said in her announcement that she wanted to talk to ten people of that age. Interested parties can send an email.

Then her mailbox exploded. “I am completely blown away by all those reactions,” says Oomen. “I didn’t expect this at all.” According to the author, it shows that there is a need for such a book and that many people want to talk about the challenges in their lives. Oomen: “I am very happy with all those reactions, it is heartwarming”.

Perhaps there is even more to write about life in your twenties than teenage life.

How Do I Survive fan Amber Barels

Conversely, fans of the series are delighted that Oomen is once again throwing himself into Rosa’s life. Amber Barels grew up with the series, she says: “Rosa was about my age and I had my first kiss, for example when she had her first kiss. I really started reading through her books,” says Barels, who is now 27 year.

“So I’m going to read this one anyway. There’s plenty to highlight, from maintaining a good relationship to looking for a job. Maybe there’s even more to write about the twenties than about teenage life.”

25-year-old Kimberly Brock also has no doubts that she will buy the new book. She has the entire original series in her mother’s closet.

A thousand emails

“I immediately became enthusiastic about the news. Every birthday I asked for a book to complete my series again. It was nice to immerse yourself in that world and sometimes also to realize that you weren’t so bad yourself. Rosa’s life was a bit more dramatic than mine, but some things were also recognizable, such as living with divorced parents.”

Brock considers accepting Oomen’s invitation to talk to her. She won’t be alone. Oomen already received “about a thousand emails” after her call, the writer says. “So I guess I just have to organize something.”
