“How Different Colored Lights Can Transform Your Skin: The Best LED Devices for Optimal Results”

How can different colored lights affect your skin and which devices do it best?

LED lights may be the backbone of the HDTV and smart home lighting industries, but bright little bulbs may also be the secret to glowing skin.

Celebrities like Shay Mitchell and Chrissy Teigen(opens in a new tab) Instagrammed cyborg-like face masks for a long time, literally lit from within, and bragging about their unbeatable skin benefits. These masks typically emit red or blue light, are worn for short periods of time, and appear to scream “celebrity gimmick.” But it’s not just the celebrities – some skincare professionals and dermatologists are also touting LED skin light therapy, used in both spas and home devices.

“Light is able to change the way skin works temporarily,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jared Jagdeo told Indigo Buzz. “Light is actually able to upregulate or modulate the function of mitochondria by stimulating what is called the electron transport chain. It helps to generate more energy. And when our skin cells produce more energy, the thought goes, positive health and aesthetic effects can occur.

According to Dr. Jagdeo, depending on the skin care benefits you are looking for, the color of your LED light therapy can play an important role. Blue light works a little more tightly than ultraviolet light, he said, and can help treat acne and improve the appearance of acne-prone skin. Red light, on the other hand, is said to have anti-inflammatory properties. These are the two colors most commonly used in skin care practices, but some home devices also include mid-range amber color and colorless infrared.

LED skin therapy also comes in many forms. Consumers can choose from the aforementioned full face masks, fixed light panels, or small handheld wands to provide their preferred colored light regime. To browse the options, at Beauty, Hacked tested one of each type over several weeks: the SkinGym Wrinklit LED Mask(opens in a new tab)SolaWave red light therapy(opens in a new tab) and blue light therapy wand(opens in a new tab)and TrophySkin Rejuvalite MD Panel(opens in a new tab).
