How did Putin’s Sputnik V vaccine affect the US stock market?

The announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin about the registration of the world’s first vaccine against COVID-19 has caused an increase in the main stock indexes of the US stock market.

One of the main indicators of the US market is the S&P 500 index, which had risen 0.5%, approaching its record since the end of February. While the Dow Jones industrial index rose 1.1% and the Nasdaq Composite index traded 0.4%.

Analysts consulted by CNBC consider that the announcement of the Russian president on the mass production of the vaccine called Sputnik V for the population in early 2021 has caused these increases in the stock market. Despite the fact that some doctors have expressed their exceptions about the Russian vaccine that with the help of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) it will also be produced abroad.

However, investors took the news positively and even viewed it as proof of the imminent end of the pandemic.

Among the companies that led with the increase in their shares are those that develop their own vaccines, such as Johnson & Johnson (their share price rose 0.2%).

On the other hand, companies in the sectors most affected by the coronavirus pandemic and awaiting the vaccine also raised their shares in price, for example, American Airlines shares rose 6.8%.

Al end on August 11, the S&P 500 closed down 0.8%, the Dow closed down 0.36% and the Nasdaq down 1.69%.
