How Deepfake AI Technology is Being Used for Fraud in China

Again fraud which uses video deepfake casualties. This time the victim was a man from China who lost billions of rupiah due to deepfake video calls.

The victim of the scam lives in Baotou, a region in Inner Mongolia. According to local police reports, fraudsters make video calls using technology artificial intelligence (AI) to imitate the victim’s friend’s likeness, including his face and voice.

This deepfake video succeeded in convincing the victim to send 4.3 million Yuan or around Rp. 9.1 billion. The victim believed that the money was sent to a friend who needed money to make a deposit during the auction process.


The victim only realized he had been tricked after his friend admitted that he did not know anything about the incident. The victim then reported the fraud incident to the local police who were able to recover most of the stolen funds but are still trying to return the rest.

This fraud case immediately shocked the Chinese internet world, including on the social media platform Weibo where Chinese netizens were busy discussing the threat of fraud using deepfake yes AI

On Weibo, the hashtag ‘#AI fraud has mushroomed throughout the country’ immediately became a trending topic with 120 million views as of Monday (22/5) yesterday.

“This shows that photos, sounds and videos can all be exploited by fraudsters. Can information security rules follow these people’s techniques?” said one Chinese netizen, as quoted by Reuters, Thursday (25/5/2023).

China itself has tightened supervision of technology and applications AI amidst the hectic cases of fraud that rely on AI, especially those that manipulate faces and voices. The Chinese government has also adopted regulations to protect victims of AI scams.

Last month, the Chinese government also arrested a man for the first time who used ChatGPT to create and spread fake news about a train crash.
