And the corona virus? The war in Ukraine, the looming energy crisis and Sunday’s votes are currently eclipsing everything in the news. Now, however, the omcron subvariant BA.2.75.2 is attracting the attention of corona researchers.
A study from Sweden is of particular interest. This led to the conclusion that the omcron sub-variant is capable of evading antibodies. Means: Previous vaccinations or infections lose some of their effect.
Benjamin Murrell and Daniel Sheward of the renowned Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm led the study. in the “Spiegel” explain: “For the same amount of antibodies in the blood, this new sub-variant infects cells more easily than the omicron BA.5 variant.”
“Possible wave of infections in autumn”
Marco Binder, virologist of the German Center for Cancer Research in Heidelberg, clarifies: “These new variants do not concern us who have to fear deaths and conditions like in Bergamo”. But: “It could very well be that you are more likely to get infected and that many people get sick in a short time.”
Asked by Blick, the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) writes that ten cases of crowns with the variant BA.2.75.2 are known in Switzerland. “A wave of autumn infections in Switzerland with one of these sub-variants is possible.” But the BAG also points out that the omicron sub-variant does not lead to a more severe disease than the previous omicron variants.
And what is the general situation of the crown in Switzerland? “According to last week’s assessment, the epidemiological situation is currently stable.”
