How come Shell fuel prices are so expensive, you’re not afraid to lose competition?

Jakarta

World oil prices are still at a very high level, above US$ 100 per barrel. Inevitably high world oil prices will have an impact on fuel prices (BBM) in the community.

So far, Shell has been the provider BBM which set the highest price. The question is, how can Shell sell fuel at such a high price?

VP Trading and Supply PT Shell Indonesia Sendy Soeriaatmadja admits that BBM Shells are sold the most expensive. Especially when compared to Pertamina, which he calls the big brother alias ‘big brother’.

“If you look at it, our prices are more expensive than our big brother (Pertamina),” said Sendy in a discussion forum with reporters at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (28/6/2022).

Quoted from its official website Monday, June 27 yesterday, Shell sold fuel at Rp 17,900 per liter for Shell Super with RON 92 in Jakarta, Banten and West Java. Meanwhile, Pertamina only sells Pertamax which is RON 92 at a much cheaper price of Rp 12,500 per liter.

Sendy stated that the fuel price set by his party was not arbitrary. He explained that so far the price set by Shell is still in the highest retail price range, aka HET.

“In the regulation there is a pricing formula, so you just need to enter the numbers, and this price comes out. This is the highest retail price. The formula has MOPS there, there is also distribution cost,” said Sendy.

“The price is set by the government, we never set the price ourselves, so instead of increasing the price, we just follow the government’s direction,” he said again.

He briefly leaked his calculations. According to him, the current benchmark for MOPS fuel prices has reached US$ 148 per barrel. If it is calculated per liter, it is Rp. 13,496 per liter for 92 RON fuel.

That’s just the fuel price, not to mention the logistics costs. So, he concluded that Shell’s price was actually reasonable.

“That’s Rp. 13,496 per liter per liter for 92. There is still an additional logistic cost. Bring it from Singapore, continue with the transport row, continue to invest in the gas station, there are 180. Yes, finally build, build, build, so yes the price is that’s the way it is,” said Sendy.

Even selling fuel for that price, according to Sendy, does not give him much profit. “In fact, the margin is very small, actually, basically everything has been determined from the government,” he said.

Despite setting a high price, Shell is not afraid of losing customers. The explanation is on the next page
